The Association that today brings together over 10 thousand cooperative enterprises, active in all Italian regions and in all economic sectors, creating development and wealth while keeping people and territories at the centre of their activity.

Legacoop develops services and projects to facilitate the creation and growth of cooperative enterprises. It promotes the cooperative culture affirming its distinctive values. Through its representative action Legacoop promotes the economic, social and civil role of cooperatives, based on their capacity to respond to people’s needs.

Legacoop is organized into sector branches and territorial branches, with its regional and provincial offices.

In 2011, together with AGCI and Confcooperative, it created the Alliance of Italian Cooperatives. Legacoop is also a member of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA).

Our mission

A dynamic and innovative association, useful to the economic, social and civic protagonism of cooperative enterprises.

Legacoop guarantees the protection of cooperative rules, culture and values. Legacoop develops services and projects to foster the birth and growth of cooperative enterprises in all sectors and areas of the country. Legacoop promotes the cooperative culture, affirming its distinctive values and supporting the economic, social and civic role of cooperative enterprises and their ability to respond to the needs of people, the environment and territories.

Our vision

A healthy market, in tune with a fair and clean society and in harmony with its parts.

Legacoop wants a society in which people and communities are responsible, active, leading and supportive. For Legacoop, the cooperative is a form of enterprise that is democratic, balanced and competitive, capable of nurturing fair and sustainable growth, able to constantly work towards economic well-being, a good quality of life – work, environmental and personal, and able to care for people and territories.

Legacoop Values Charter

The principles that Legacoop and its members follow to orient their actions are rooted in the ‘Declaration of Cooperative Identity’, approved by the International Cooperative Alliance during its 31st Congress in Manchester, 1995. The Italian Constitution remains, however, the prime and vital national reference. Within this framework Legacoop has developed its own distinctive values to which all its member cooperative enterprises and any companies they choose to set up during their growth path, even if of a different legal nature, are called upon to refer.

1

Being free from the constraints of political affiliations and economic and financial powers, allows the cooperative enterprise to realise all other values with independence and autonomy.

2

A cooperative enterprise builds its development without giving in to any form of exploitation of labour and people; on the contrary, it fights uncertainty and precariousness and pursues safe and high-quality employment.

3

The cooperative enterprise values equal opportunities policies, against all forms of exclusion and segregation – particularly gender segregation. It does so, not only as an integral part of its identity, but as a critical success factor, as it believes that there can be no balanced growth where there is a waste of human assets. For this reason, the objective of the cooperative enterprise and Legacoop, is to achieve gender equality and foster the development of skills and the empowerment of all women and girls. These policies are an integral part of the social reporting of the cooperative enterprise and Legacoop.

4

The cooperative enterprise is a dynamic and competitive presence, capable of being a reference on the market and of calming the prices of goods and services, capable of valorising and qualifying labour services and business activities.

5

The cooperative enterprise – in a world in which decision-making centres appear to be increasingly distant – is a close benchmark, capable of reading the needs of people and communities and able to provide effective responses accordingly. It promotes self-help and believes the practice of democratic participation to be effective and useful.

6

The cooperative enterprise operates according to the principles of social responsibility, i.e. it balances competitive needs with care for the environment, the communities in which it operates, the people who work there, those who use its services or buy its products. Reports, budgets and other forms of proceedings are an established practice to account for this commitment.

7

The cooperative enterprise conducts itself and acts with transparency and honesty towards members, suppliers, customers, citizens and consumers. Through its actions it nurtures social networks and strengthens individual capabilities, contributing to strengthening a climate of trust and free proactiveness.

8

The cooperative enterprise operates in the market pursuing equity, or the balance between what it offers and what it receives through exchanges with its surroundings.

9

The cooperative enterprise shapes its attitude on mutual cooperation with other cooperatives.

10

The cooperative enterprise believes solidarity to be a distinctive value in the relationship between people, an inspiring principle of its very own existence and a rule in its internal relations. Solidarity, for the cooperative enterprise, is also self-organisation and the ability to do things together: for this reason, it is considered a value to be recognised and developed in the local communities in which it is located. Finally, for all cooperators, solidarity is a direct commitment to be translated into concrete choices and actions to help people overcome their difficulties and build new opportunities for everyone.
